Burden of a Crown

There is a price to pay for magnificence. Adorned with one of natures’ more glorious arrays, the bull elk faces incredible challenges as he secures his harem of cows from interlopers. This burden is not easy and attitude plays into his success.

The composition suggests there is an intruder on the right. The “swing” of the torso and sharp turn speaks of the seriousness of the situation and the up hill slope in front projects the scope of the task.

There may be no battle nonetheless the role of reigning bull can be fatal, as fatigue and reduced nourishment may spell his end . . . a burden of a crown.
