This composition presented quite a challenge. I wanted a strong interplay of figures depicting intense action, yet, at the same time, portraying a very tender and meaningful moment.

With careful placement of the figures there is a strong contrast of reflected light and deep shadow. To me this juxtaposition adds to the delight and drama of the courtship scene.

The title, inferred by neck position, was the simplest part of the work, but it is easy to “read” and seems to lead the eye into the amorous tumult below. Swans, with their elegant, graceful lines and significant mass of body and wings, were an easy choice of subject.
